Reviews

Here I bestow upon you absolute FACT about which foods and restaurants are outstanding and which are absolute shitholes (heavy sarcasm). I'm a firm believer that the only person who will ever 100% agree with a review is the person who did the reviewing. Even that is subject to change. That being said, I'm still sharing my thoughts on my past eats; take them with a grain of salt (or sugar if you prefer). I do not apologize if I hate a particular food or restaurant you love. Besides, that just means there's more for you. 😜

First Impression: Wicked PopWich of the West (Village)

IT'S HERE GUYS. Popbar, a shop in the West Village that specializes in handcrafted gelato, sorbet, and yogurt served on a stick, has just released their newest creation: THE POPWICH. For those of you who aren't familiar with how Popbar works - you start off with choosing your gelato/sorbet/yogurt flavor which is already prepared in stick form. Then you have the option of dipping/drizzling the pop in your choice of chocolate (dark, milk, white) and coating it in different toppings (pistachios, hazelnuts, coconut, and more). Amazing, right?

Starting today, May 5th, things at Popbar got a whole lot sweeter. Behold, the Popwich, a homage to a classic childhood treat - the ice cream sandwich. Maybe you're underwhelmed by this idea; I know I was. I always considered the traditional chocolate cookie/vanilla ice cream combo to be just okay, particularly because I had an aversion to how mushy the cookie always was. Popbar has always been innovative, impressive, and delicious in my experience, so I knew I still needed to give it a try.

I'M SO GLAD I TRIED IT. I went in already knowing the gelato would be top notch, but these chocolate wafers exceeded my expectations entirely. Opposed to my memories of mush, these were crisp and rich in flavor. So much so that I would order a box (or 12) of just the wafers (hit me up Popbar 😉). My flavor combination was Irish Coffee gelato, white chocolate dip, pistachios, and coconut. The beauty (and danger) of this place is that you can go back 100 times and still get something different each visit.

My recommendations are to get the Popwich with a gelato flavor rather than sorbet/yogurt for a more decadent experience. Also, be sure to hold on to the actual sandwich (not just the stick) when eating to ensure you get that perfect bite (also so it doesn't fall apart on you and you're not left crying in the middle of the West Village).

Overall Rating: 9/10

I shaved off a point solely because if others have unfond memories like I do of the basic bitch ice cream sandwich, they may not be keen on trying this gem whatsoever.

Special thanks to Palate Connect who hooked a sister up with the pre-product launch and Popbar who so graciously hosted us!

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Go get yourself a Popwich and tell them @thehungryturk sent you ðŸ˜‰

Keep calm and pop on,
